Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the Union Budget for the financial year 2021-22 in the Parliament at 11 a.m. today. This is Sitharaman’s third budget after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government returned to power in the 2019 general elections with a bigger mandate.

Sitharaman now has the daunting task of reviving an economy that was floundering since before the coronavirus struck while manoeuvring through the various new challenges that have emerged due to the pandemic-led lockdowns. With India’s flagship employment scheme failing to keep up with the demand for jobs, farmers protesting on the streets and wealth inequality getting more stark, Sitharaman’s economic package will be closely eyed by the country. Economists and market observers have noted that the budget will be a fine balancing act between stimulating long-term growth while also keeping government finances in check.
